Fun, uplifting talk planned by rehabbed athlete

September 3, 2013

Perspective is the key.

At least it will be when Derrick Tennant takes the stage at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum for the fall speaker series. The title of this year’s presentation is “The Love Chromosome.”

The series is brought to the community through a partnership between Howard College Foundation Speaker Series and Scenic Mountain Medical Center’s Healthy Woman program.

“The Howard College Foundation is pleased to once again be partnering with Scenic Mountain Medical Center’s Healthy Woman program to bring yet another amazing speaker to the residents of Big Spring,” Jan Foresyth, director of institutional advancement, said.

Twice a year, the Howard College Foundation Speaker Series brings in an individual to inspire and motivate members of the community. This year marks the fifth year and while the basis of the series is still the same, there is a new twist on the type of speaker who will be taking center stage. The event is free, but a ticket is required for admittance.

“Derrick will be delivering a message that will cause the audience to look at the obstacles they face in a new perspective. His story will shed light on the fact that while we may all be fighting our own battles how we come out of them is strictly up to us and nobody else,” Amanda Duforat, SMMC marketing coordinator, said. “We can each overcome whatever obstacle is put into our lives if we choose to do so and anything can be beautiful if we choose to see it that way.”

While in previous years speakers have delivered their motivational speeches in a serious tone, Tennant will be bringing a bit of comedic relief. He will be sharing his personal journey with some humor thrown into the mix.
