Gaston William (G.W.) Martin

Gaston William (G.W.) Martin, 80, of Ackerly went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, in Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Jim Wright and family members officiating. Interment will follow at Ackerly Cemetery in Ackerly, Texas.

G.W. was born to Gaston and Iva Martin on Oct. 19, 1931, in Sparenburg, Texas. After graduating from Ackerly High School in 1948, he began his career as a second generation farmer. G.W. and Vernelle (Carpenter) were happily married Dec. 4, 1955, in Nolan, Texas.

He was a lifetime member of Ackerly Methodist Church and served for many years on the boards of Sands ISD and West Texas Phone Co-Op. He enjoyed traveling and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

G.W. was a strong, hard working, well respected man to all who knew him. He was was also a loving husband, doting father, proud grandfather and brother. He will be greatly missed. He leaves behind many good friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Martin; and an older sister, Laverne Gaskins.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vernelle Martin; and children, Elaine Rose and husband Tom of Dallas, Lisa Bailey and husband Curtis of Plainview, Susan Long and husband Roddy of Andrews and Paul Martin and wife Shannon of Decatur; a daughter-in-law, Tani (Martin) Boyd of Slaton; 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Janelle Jones.

The family suggests memorials be made to Ackerly Methodist Church, or to a favorite charity.
