Garden City’s Blayne Batla scrambles on a play during the Bearkats’ 66-20 win over Robert Lee in bi-district playoff action Thursday in Robert Lee.
ROBERT LEE — When Robert Lee’s Foster Allen caught a 6-yard pass from Justin Gartman to give the Steers a 16-14 lead over defending state champion Garden City, the emotion and excitement was clear on their sideline.
But the composure and calmness was evident on Garden City’s sideline.
Thanks to key picks, big runs from Josh Colunga and a stout second-half defensive performance, the Bearkats fought off an early rally from Robert Lee to thump the Steers 66-20 in bi-district playoff action Thursday in Robert Lee.
The Bearkats have seen a lot of different offenses, but one they probably seen a lot of is the spread. GCHS head coach Vance Jones said he was glad Robert Lee tested his squad Thursday night. It will come in handy.
“They’re a pretty good spread team,” he said. “They can throw the ball fairly well and they’ve got some guys who can catch it. You’ve got an 80 by 40 field here with six people trying to guard it and it’s hard to cover a good spread game.”
All Garden City had to do is adjust and keep applying the pressure on offense. Defensively, however, the Bearkats turned in a solid performance.
