Gem show a rock-solid 'go-to' event

March 3, 2011

It's a gem of a show!

It rocks!

OK. Enough with the corny stuff. The truth is, this weekend's Gem and Mineral Show, put on by the Big Spring Prospector's Club, is a “go-to” event, even if you aren't into rocks or gems. First, but not foremost, it's free. Second, you could win a door prize, or even a very valuable faceted stone. Third, you could learn something. Throughout the show, artisans will be demonstrating skills like making cabochons and beaded jewelry. Fourth, you could pick up some really neat things for your home or to give a special someone on their birthday or Christmas. Mother's Day? You know it.

A wide assortment of handmade jewelry will be for sale, as will numerous other items — belt buckles, pins, beads, crystal.

There's the always popular Wheel of Fortune, where shoppers pay a nominal fee and spin the wheel to see what they can win. There is not a “Lose Your Turn” blank on this wheel, so everyone goes home a winner, every time.

And there is a snack bar, with plenty of tables and chairs. That means you can stop for a rest and enjoy a cupcake or candy bar and a soft drink or something more substantial. They usually offer sandwiches, hot dogs or hamburgers, chips and the like, too.

Your patronage will be much appreciated by the Prospector's Club, whose members have been doing their thing in the Crossroads area since 1968.
The Gem and Mineral Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Howard County Fair Barn off FM 700.

Take some time this weekend and go to the show.

It rocks. Really.
