George C. Franklin

July 26, 2013

George C. Franklin, 83, of Big Spring died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at his residence. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Dennis Teeters officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

He was born Sept. 23, 1929, in Big Spring, Texas, to Lucille and Roy Franklin. He was one of the first babies born in the original Malone Hospital. Like many children growing up in the depression, the family moved numerous times. They moved back and forth from California to Big Spring.

At age five he was very ill with Scarlet fever and was not expected to live through the night. His mother went to an Assembly of God Revival and asked them to pray for his healing and God granted her that miracle. George was a devoted Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church. He was involved in missionary work in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras.

He began work at the Cosden Refinery in 1951. His career there was interrupted to serve in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He then returned to Cosden and retired from Fina after 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Big Spring; one daughter, Janice Ferguson and husband Glen of Big Spring; one grandson, Lance Monteleone and wife Lindsey of Coppell; two great-grandchildren, Mia Monteleone and Knox Monteleone, both of Coppell; and one brother, Fred Franklin and wife Betty of Midland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Clayton Thomas Franklin on July 26, 1998; and one brother, Roy Franklin, who died in World War II.

Pallbearers will be Carl Durham, James Carroll Lough, Jerry Hill, Stan Feaster, J.L. Stevens and Glen Ferguson.

The family suggests memorials to the Circle Six Baptist Encampment, P.O. Box 976, Stanton, TX 79782.
