March Madness is fueling enthusiasm all across the United States â even in Big Spring!
Hoops, Dreams and Goals, an effort by West Texas Centers to celebrate Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, will be held Friday at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
In its ninth year, the event pits 10 teams in friendly competition, tournament style. Fans and organizers also recognize spirit teams and sportsmanship.
The tournament is free and open to the public. More than 1,000 people are expected to attend.
âI tell everyone that I meet that if they want to attend one event all year, they need to attend Hoops, Dreams and Goals,â said Shelley Smith, West Texas Centers CEO. âIt encourages our athletes, but most of all it encourages all those in attendance.â
The event begins at 8:30 a.m. when teams will enter the coliseum led by a boisterous beat from the Big Spring High School Drum Line. Mayor Tommy Duncan is expected to be on hand to welcome participants and those in attendance, and special guests will be recognized.
The teams will tip off at 9 a.m. and will follow bracket play. Teams participating in bracket play are: Big Spring Heat, Sweetwater Red Rattlers, Ballinger Longhorns, Snyder Wildkatz, Seminole Pink Panthers, Monahans/Pecos Warriors, Midland Panthers, Odessa Tigers, Abilene Chili Peppers and the San Angelo Bobcats.
Cheer squads from each team will perform in a halftime competition.
âWhen we first planned Hoops, Dreams and Goals we realized that not everyone wanted to compete on the court as a basketball player,â Smith said. âSo, we planned competitions among cheer squads and other special events. Not only have our athletes been practicing, but so have our cheer squads.â
The event is sponsored by West Texas Centers, Howard College, The Arc of Howard County, ALON USA, Prescription Services Inc., KBST, Cowboys Restaurant, KBYG, Gallagher Benefits and Atmos Energy.
