Girl Scout cookies to go on sale

January 17, 2011

Shannon Duncan, left, and Janice Hogan, area Girl Scouts of America officials, are shown with samples of cookies scouts will be selling beginning Jan. 22.

Have a sweet tooth? Want to help area youth? Want to satisfy both desires at the same time?
The Girl Scouts of America will start their annual cookie sale later this month, which means area residents will have ample opportunity to both indulge their appetite and support an organization that helps prepare girls to be leaders in society.
The annual sale begins in Big Spring Jan. 22, said Janice Hogan, membership manager for the Girls Scouts of the Desert Southwest region.
Eight varieties of the popular snacks will be on sale this year — lemonade, shortbread, thin mints, peanut butter sandwich, peanut butter patties, caramel delight and “Shout Out,” a new variety added this year which is described as a caramelized sugar cookie similar to a ginger snap.
The cookies will sell for $3.50 a box and proceeds will go to fund Girl Scout projects for the coming year, Hogan said.
“The individual Girl Scout troops receive 55 cents for each box sold, and the local service units receive 3 cents per box,” Hogan said. “That money will be used to fund activities such as camps, service projects, field trips or anything else they decide to do as a troop.”
To guard against fraudulent sales, each Girl Scout will have a laminated “cookie card” on hand to assure would-be buyers of their identity.
The sale ends March 13.
