All the Big Spring Lady Steers needed was a spark to fend off Abilene Cooper in a 45-35 win Saturday in Steer Gym.
The Lady Steers’ mishaps and turnovers prevented them from gaining a substantial lead over Cooper, but they were in a tied game 24-24 as the third quarter was coming to an end.
That spark they needed came in the form of a 10-2 run, thanks to clutch shooting from Cerbi Ritchey, Valerie Ross and Mackenzie Stone.
“I thought it was our defense,” head coach Mike Warren said. “That’s what we’re trying to hang our hat on. We want to start off every game doing that. First half, it was just turnovers, threw the ball away a little bit, missed shots and they got confidence. We just went down and regrouped at halftime. They did a good job.”
While Big Spring — or Cooper for that matter — couldn’t put the opponent away, Ritchey’s bucket started the run, giving Big Spring a 26-24 lead. Then Ritchey got a steal on the next Cooper possession, leading to a huge 3-pointer from Ross to push the lead to 29-24.
While Cooper answered with a score, Mackenzie Stone made a bucket at the 2:33 mark, Big Spring forced a turnover and Ritchey completed a 3-point play for the 31-26 lead. The Lady Steers never looked back.View more articles in:
