September 1, 2011

Jim Conley presented Kristen Poffinbargar with a $2,500 scholarship to use towards furthering her education. Keeping Big Spring beautiful is a community effort. no matter what the age of the volunteer.

Kristen Poffinbargar, a sophomore at Big Spring High School, recently started the beautification process of the east side entrance of Big Spring around Third Street and Tulane. Her efforts are aided by the receipt of the Conley Grant.

She was awarded the grant in July and began work on the project in August. In recognition of her efforts, she is receiving a $2,500 scholarship from former resident Jim Conley.

“This was something I could do to help the community,” Poffinbargar said. “In return, it helps me pursue my college career.”

She has spent three days cleaning up the concrete cactus planter boxes, but said the project is nowhere near complete. Wood chips are going to be brought in and placed around the stone cacti located in the area. The northern section of the property, where other stone cacti stand, will also be spruced up.

“The process isn't easy, but it's helping the entrance to Big Spring look better and is going to be even more presentable for visitors coming through,” Poffinbargar said. “It's going to be prettier and more inviting.”
