Hang gliding competition returning to Big Spring

August 4, 2011

McMahon-Wrinkle Airpark will again be host for the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding National competition, scheduled this year for Aug. 14-21.

“It's unusual to have these competitions in the same place so it really is a big deal that Big Spring keeps having them,” said Terry Wofford, event coordinator. “This is a good way to get our town name out there past the perimeter of Texas.”

The format each day will be determined by weather conditions, according to Wofford. A pilot's meeting will be held between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to determine the task for the day. Pilots will take off between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. There are some days which will include the pilots returning to the airport and other days when they will fly to another destination.

For more information on the hang gliding competition, call the airpark at 264-2362.
