Howard College's “second season” has arrived.

The HC men's basketball team, which finished second in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference this season, will open play in the Region V tournament Thursday in Lubbock.

The Hawks will face Weatherford College, the third seed from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, in a first-round game at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Rip Griffin Center on the Lubbock Christian University campus.

The winner of the regional tournament advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. later this month.

Howard (21-7) finished tied for second in conference play with New Mexico Junior College, but won a higher tournament seeding based on league tiebreakers. Other WJCAC representatives at the tournament are league champion and No. 1-ranked South Plains College and Odessa College, which finished fourth.

Aside from Weatherford, other NTJCAC representatives at the tournament will be league champion Ranger College, number two seed McLennan Community College, and fourth seed Temple College.

In other first-round games Thursday, NMJC will face McLennan at noon, Odessa and Ranger square off at 5 p.m. and South Plains takes on Temple at 7 p.m.

If the Hawks win, they will take on the Odessa-Ranger winner at noon Saturday.

The Region V tournament championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.
