HC softball sweeps doubleheader against Cisco

The Howard College softball team went from a close win to an onslaught in its doubleheader against Cisco College Tuesday at Big Spring High School.
The Hawks needed an RBI single from sophomore infielder Lana Dominguez in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Lady Wranglers in the first game.
They didn’t have to sweat so much in the second game, upending Cisco College 10-1 in six innings.
“I didn’t think we played very well the first game,” HC head coach Kelly Raines said. “We left way too many runners on base. We weren’t scoring. They scored in the seventh inning and then we led off with a double a single to win it.”
The game was deadlocked at two when the Hawks pitcher Alexis Beltran helped her own cause with an RBI single to put Howard ahead.
Beltran was stingy on the mound until Cisco found a way to tie it at the last minute in the top of the seventh. But Dominguez came through in the bottom of the inning as Beltran got the complete game win.
The Hawks switched things up in the second game and scored five runs in the first inning on the way to the 10-1 win. Pitcher Salina Mitchell got the complete game win.
It’s been a turbulent past few days for the Hawks. Games have constantly been rescheduled because of the weather and the pipes freezing at Foundation Field. That prompted the games’ move to Big Spring High School.
“When the weather is like this, we just have to do what we can, whatever we can,” Raines said. “We were thankful just to get in a game (Tuesday). I was worried about (Tuesday) a little bit because we hadn’t had much practice. We haven’t been on our field. We warmed up the first game and we got it going the second game.”
The Hawks are on the road Friday for a matchup against Lubbock Christian at 1 p.m.
