HC softball takes 1 of 2 vs. Clarendon

March 12, 2012

The Howard College softball team showed some rust from a long layoff in the first game of its doubleheader with Clarendon College Sunday, but rebounded in the nightcap to earn a split in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference opener for both teams Sunday afternoon.

Clarendon took the first game, 13-7, but Howard came back to take the second game by a 15-5 score.

The Hawks improved their record to 18-8 overall.

In the opener, Clarendon took advantage of ineffective Howard pitching to take the win.

“We just couldn't get any outs,” HC Coach Kelly Raines. “Our pitchers just didn't do a good job at all. It was just a bad day for all three of them. We hadn't played in awhile, so I'm sure we were a little rusty.”

That rust, however, was shaken off in the second game, as pitcher Sandra Serna rebounded from taking the loss in the opener to earn the win in the nightcap.

Serna was aided by a Howard offense that cranked three home runs in the game, including a grand slam from Faith Koria. Olive Naotala hit home runs in both games to increase her season total to 13, and Shelby Shelton added a three-run bomb for the Hawks.

“In the second game, we came out clicking on all cylinders at the plate,” Raines said.

The Hawks will travel to Arizona during spring break for a series of games beginning with a doubleheader Wednesday against Eastern Arizona. Following that, Howard will participate in a tournament at Casa Grande, Ariz.
