SNYDER — The Howard College women’s basketball team had reason to be encouraged at the end of a sloppy first half against Western Texas College, considering the Lady Westerners weren’t doing much better.
That was because the Hawks’ defense stayed steady throughout Tuesday’s game, and once the offense woke up, Howard College had a firm grip on the game.
“With most teams, if you’re not playing well offensively, you don’t play well defensively,” HC head coach Earl Diddle said after his team’s 51-45 win Monday. “I really think that’s how we won the game in the first half because we’re not playing well, but we found a way to stay in the game.”
The Hawks were led by Zeslie Johnson, who finished with 14 points. Taniqua Ards had 12.
For Howard the first half was riddled with turnovers and missed shots. The Hawks had 10 turnovers and were 37.5 percent from the field.
The Lady Westerners finished the first half at 40.9 percent from the field with 15 turnovers.
