Think you are the only one with problems? Guess what? You're not.

That was the message nationally-known motivational speaker Lisa Smartt relayed at the Healthy Woman second anniversary celebration held Thursday night at the Dora Robert Community Center.

“I speak about my personal confessions of my own weaknesses and all the things I really struggle with and how that can help to encourage other people,” said Smartt, whose comedic stories had the room of more than 200 attendees in peals of laughter through most of her program. “Now you say, 'Wait a second, if you are completely messed up, how will that encourage other people?', but it does because it takes down walls of people telling the truth about their lives and not having facades or being afraid to get the help they need.”

“Everyone of us in this room needs help in some area,” she continued. “For me, it's weight. For other people, it may be smoking, it may be mental health, maybe they have emotional issues … but every person in here needs support. When I tell all these kind of funny or bad things about myself and explain how that can be a bridge, it helps people hopefully. It looks like a comedic presentation, but it has a purpose.”
