Helsley named teacher of the year

May 12, 2011

Beccie Helsley, Washington Elementary fourth grade teacher, is presented with her Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from Bo Clawson and Paul Moran of the Staked Plains Lodge 598.

Washington Elementary School fourth grade teacher Beccie Helsley was honored with the MiraBeau B. Lamar Outstanding Teacher Recognition Award Thursday afternoon.

Helsley has been a teacher for the past 39 years. She has taught 33 years for the Big Spring Independent School District and 29 of those years at Washington Elementary.

The teacher of the year award is awarded each year to one teacher from the district and is decided by a nomination. This is the first year that a teacher at Washington Elementary has received this award.

“I nominated Mrs. Helsley because of the fabolous teacher she is,” principal Dalia Benavides said. “She still has students coming back after all these years to thank her for what they learned from her.”
As for the surprise of the award, Helsley is more than appreciative.
“I have never received anything like this,” Helsley said. “It's one of the best honors that I've ever had.”
