Historic highway made its way through Big Spring

April 30, 2014

Once known as the “Broadway of America” and now just forgotten stretches of roads, the Bankhead Highway was the first intercontinental, all weather highway built at the turn of the last century during a movement that would transformed the country’s transportation system.

“The Bankhead Highway, I think, is the most significant highway in America that nobody has heard of,” said Dan L. Smith, author of “Texas Highway No. 1, The Bankhead Highway in Texas.”

Smith was in Big Spring Saturday at the Heritage Museum to give a lecture and sign copies of his book about his research of the Texas segment of the highway that stretched from Washington, D.C., to San Diego, Calif.
