Once known as the â€śBroadway of Americaâ€ť and now just forgotten stretches of roads, the Bankhead Highway was the first intercontinental, all weather highway built at the turn of the last century during a movement that would transformed the countryâ€™s transportation system.
â€śThe Bankhead Highway, I think, is the most significant highway in America that nobody has heard of,â€ť said Dan L. Smith, author of â€śTexas Highway No. 1, The Bankhead Highway in Texas.â€ť
Smith was in Big Spring Saturday at the Heritage Museum to give a lecture and sign copies of his book about his research of the Texas segment of the highway that stretched from Washington, D.C., to San Diego, Calif.
