As area residents prepare to celebrate the Christmas holiday this weekend, many area businesses and agencies are preparing to take time off from their routines to spend with their family and friends.
The city of Big Spring will close all offices, including the municipal landfill, Friday and Monday in observance of the Christmas holiday. There will be no sanitation pick-up Friday or Monday, as well. Business is expected to resume at normal hours Tuesday morning.
While sanitation services will be shut down Friday and Monday, area residents looking to get rid of large or cumbersome holiday-related garbage won't be out of luck, as the municipality will have four large dumpsters set up around the city to help deal with the influx.
Containers have been set up in the Coronado Plaza, at the Big Spring Mall, in the College Park Shopping Center and in the 700 block of N. Gregg Street in an effort to handle the additional seasonal garbage.
Howard County employees will also be afforded time to enjoy the holiday, with offices to close Thursday at 11:30 a.m. County operations will be closed through the weekend and Monday, resuming Tuesday with normal business hours.
The Big Spring Post Office won't have such a long weekend to enjoy the Christmas holiday, however, as the local U.S. Post Office will only be closing its doors Saturday.
As many people prepare to enjoy a day off, emergency personnel will be bracing themselves for the inevitable holiday onslaught. Local agencies, including the Big Spring Police Department, Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and Howard County Sheriff’s Office, all report the weekend will be busier for them, as they pay special attention to motorists and party-goers.
Those looking for last minute gifts — or groceries — will have to hurry, as the local Wal-Mart SuperCenter will close its doors from 8 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday, the only time the department store is closed each year.
HEB will also be taking time off for the holiday, adhering to a similar schedule by closing at 8 p.m. Saturday and reopening at 6 a.m. Monday.
The Spring City Senior Citizens Center will be closed Friday through Monday, reopening Tuesday morning at normal hours.
The Herald office will also be closed Monday for the holiday, and will reopen at normal business hours Tuesday morning. There will be no paper published Monday.
