The thump, thump of basketballs can be heard across gyms around the country as tournaments ranging from the Big East to the Big XII get underway. But the thump, thump, thump of basketballs can also be heard in small recreation centers and outside courtyards across rural West Texas as participants in the upcoming Hoops, Dreams and Goals practice their jump shots for the annual hoopfest.
The Eighth Hoops Dreams and Goals 2012 competition is scheduled March 30 at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
âItâs an event our staff and our consumers look forward to every year,â said Rodney Jones, West Texas Centers chief developmental health officer.
Ten teams participate in a high-energy bracket-driven basketball tournament, punctuated by bursts of inspirational music and plenty of water and snack breaks.
âIt is the most fun I have all year long,â West Texas Centers CEO Shelley Smith said. âI smile the entire day. Everyone in attendance has a great time, from the athletes to the cheer squads to my employees. It is a great experience.â
The daylong basketball competition begins at 9 a.m. with the Big Spring High School Drum Line followed by a welcome from Big Spring Mayor Tommy Duncan and District Judge Tim Yeats.
Throughout the day, each teamâs cheer squads perform and compete for top yell squad. The cheer squads and basketball teams also compete for the highly coveted Spirit Stick, which is awarded to the team that shows the most enthusiasm.
Teams participating in bracket play are the Big Spring Heat, Sweetwater Red Rattlers, Ballinger Longhorns, Snyder Wildkatz, Seminole Pink Panthers, Monahans/Pecos Warriors, Midland Panthers, Odessa Tigers, Abilene Chili Peppers and the San Angelo Bobcats.
The event is free and open to the public. More than 1,100 people are expected to attend. The event is sponsored by West Texas Centers, Howard College, The Arc of Howard County, Alon USA, Prescription Services Inc., KBST, Gallagher Benefit Services Inc, and KBYG.
