Kaci Smith has finally found her rhythm and for the second week in a row brought home the first place prize in barrel racing this past weekend at the Western Texas College rodeo in Snyder.
Smith scorched times of 13.64 in the long round and a 13.80 in the short, which was enough for the first place finish in the average.
“Kaci is doing a great job,” said Greg Kernick, Howard College rodeo coach. “She just needs to keep going fast and we’ll see her at he national finals.”
The men’s team was led by a second place finish in bull riding by Cody Samora. Samora rode to a 76-point score on his first bull, but was unable to hang on for a score in the short round. Ironically, only one cowboy was able to cover a bull in the short go Saturday night.
In the steer wrestling, K.C. Fryar represented the Hawks with a sixth place finish in the average. He had a time of 4.20 in the long round but came up short in the finals.
Team ropers Rhett Anderson with partner Brody Self from Tarleton State University held first place after the long round after turning in a time of 5.0. The higher finish wasn’t in the cards for the duo, however, as they had to add 10 seconds to the score to finish the short go with a 15.6, which was still enough for third place finish in the average.
“We just need to work on our consistency and performing strong each week,” said Kernick. “We’ll get there.”
In other events, Wace Holmes, Chase Sullivan, Clinton Teller and Page Woodward all made strong showings for Howard, but were unable to finish up in the top spots.
Hawk rodeo will be open this coming weekend as they make preparations to host their annual rodeo April 14-16 at the Big Spring Rodeo Bowl.
