Howard College expected to raise tuition, fees

April 23, 2011

Howard College trustees will vote on recommended tuition and fee increases when they hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room.

College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said a likely loss of more than $1 million in current state funding has prompted officials to recommend the rate hikes.

Under the proposed state budget recently approved by the Texas House of Representatives, the local college district would lose $1.6 million in current state funding. That loss would come on top of cuts already mandated by the legislature, Sparks said.

To counter that, the college has frozen staff positions and has been aggressively pursuing grant money and “partnerships” with business and industry, she added.

While those efforts have helped officials save almost $1 million, Sparks said the college still must increase revenue for the coming budget cycle. Rather than increase taxes, the college will seek a hike in tuition and fees.

The proposed tuition increases are as follows:
• $10 per credit hour for students living within the college district.
• $27 per credit hour for students living out of district.
• $50 per credit hour for students living out of state (this figure does not apply to out-of-state students attending SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf).

Under that proposed formula, local students taking 12 hours of courses at Howard would pay $852 in tuition next semester, an increase of $120 from the previous year, Sparks said.
