Howard College Men, Women get road wins against Ranger, Cisco

December 6, 2012

The Howard Hawks clipped Ranger College on Wednesday 84-70 and now hold a 10-0 record. The Lady Hawks are 8-3 after defeating Cisco Junior College on Wednesday, 74-60.

RANGER — The Hawks remained perfect on the season as Howard College defeated Ranger College 84-70 Wednesday.

The 10-0 Hawks started slow, according to Head Coach Mark Adams, but picked up the pace when it was needed.

“It was an important game for us against a very good Ranger team,” Adams said. “It was a hostile environment and we were down at halftime. They played really hard the second half and found a way to win.”

Adams appreciated the test as the Hawks prepare for a tough conference schedule.

“This conference has proven to be the toughest in the country,” Adams said. “You have South Plains ranked No. 1 and Midland and New Mexico Junior College ranked in the Top 25. It will be a tremendous challenge.”

Howard College is ranked No. 3 in the nation in the JUCO men's basketball standings.

The Hawks will try to stay undefeated in front of a home crowd Friday at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum against Brookhaven College.
Game time is slated for 4 p.m.

ABILENE — Howard College dropped three straight early in the season, but have now won six in a row after defeating Cisco Junior College 74-60 Wednesday.

Head Coach Earl Diddle is pleased with his squad for coming together after dealing with some offcourt adversity.

“We had some unforeseen circumstances we had to overcome,” Diddle explained. “We were really reeling earlier in the year. We lost some players, including returner J'akema Williams when she tore her ACL. She will be out for the season.”

On the bright side, the Lady Hawks had players on the bench who were up to the task of filling the missing shoes.

Freshmen Anitria Flowers and Sundown native, sophomore Teiona Tarrant each contributed 18 points during last night's game.

“The team was collectively focused last night,” Diddle said. “The energy level was great and the defensive effort was great. We are starting to score better from the post and become a more efficient team.”

The 8-3 Lady Hawks will travel to Lubbock Christian University on Friday to take on the J.V. Squad.

Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
