Cap and gown time is back.
Howard College and SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf will kick start graduation season in the Crossroads area when the institutions hold commencement exercises this week.
SWCID's annual awards convocation, which honors the top students on campus, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the college's activity center.
The top award to be handed out Thursday will be the President's Award, given to the the top student at SWCID. The student is nominated by faculty members and selected by a vote of administrators.
Other awards to be presented at the SWCID convocation include:
â€¢ Sherry Baird Memorial Scholarship â€” given to the student who best demonstrates outstanding campus and community involvement.
â€¢ Phillip Waldrup Memorial Scholarship â€” given to the top business or computer information systems student.
â€¢ Dr. P.W. Malone Memorial Scholarship â€” presented to the student who best displays good character and the motivation to complete college and career goals.
The following day, SWCID students will receive degrees and certificates when the college holds commencement exercises at 10 a.m. in the activity center.
Howard College will hold commencement exercises for its three other campuses Friday and Saturday. Those include:
â€¢ Big Spring/Lamesa campus â€” 7 p.m. Friday in Garrett Coliseum.
â€¢ San Angelo campus â€” 10 a.m. Saturday, Foster Communications Coliseum.
In addition, Howard College nursing and dental hygiene programs have pinning ceremonies planned for Thursday and Friday. Licensed vocational nursing and associate degree nursing graduates will receive their pins at 6 p.m. Thursday in Garrett Coliseum, while the dental hygiene graduates will follow suit at 4 p.m. Friday in the Hall Center for the Arts auditorium.
