Zeslie Johnson, Kali Jerrell and Brushea Daniels of Howard College signed letters of intent to play basketball at their respective future schools Wednesday in the Hawk Room at the Dorothy Garret Coliseum on the HC campus. Each of the student-athletes received full scholarships, and are ready to take their educations ‚ÄĒ as well as their game ‚ÄĒ to the next level.
Jerrell, who signed with Stephen F. Austin University, said she has enjoyed the change Big Spring offered her.
‚ÄúIt was a good experience,‚ÄĚ Jerrell, a Nacodoches native said. ‚ÄúI had to transform. I had to learn how basketball is played in college.‚ÄĚ
Jerrell was attracted to Big Spring because of the winning tradition HC offered.
‚ÄúI did research on Coach (Earl) Diddle,‚ÄĚ she said. ‚ÄúHe will get you where you need to go and get you to a good school.‚ÄĚ
Johnson, a Midland native who signed with the University of Texas at Permian Basin, enjoyed the camaraderie she and her teammates shared during her time here.
‚ÄúThe girls on the team became like my sisters,‚ÄĚ Johnson said. ‚ÄúIt was a good atmosphere. When I came, the coaches and players all made me feel at home.‚ÄĚ
Daniels chose HC because it was within a reasonable distance from her family but found her time here rewarding.
‚ÄúMy mom was sick and I wanted to be able to visit her,‚ÄĚ she explained. ‚ÄúIt was a learning experience. I learned a lot about myself, my goals and aspirations here. I thank God for the experience. It was a wonderful community with good people who really want to see you make it.‚ÄĚ
As for Coach Diddle, he is certain that his trio of hoops stars will succeed at their next endeavors.
‚ÄúThey were wonderful to work with and very cooperative. I am pleased that they are moving on. It's a happy day for me.‚ÄĚ
Diddle now has some gaps to fill, but thinks next year will be another competitive year for woman's basketball.
‚ÄúI am busy recruiting,‚ÄĚ Diddle added. ‚ÄúOur goal is to be a champion, but this was one of our better years. Our injuries kept us from having a great year, but the team performed well, we went to New Mexico and won convincingly.‚ÄĚ
In addition to their success on the court, the HC woman's basketball team had the highest average grade point average of any other HC team with a 3.25.View more articles in:
