The Steers have lost three straight. After a nearly flawless 5-0 start, Big Spring has yet to taste victory in District 4-3A. It appears unlikely — barring some miracle — the Steers will be making a playoff appearance. It may sound bleak, but this time last season, the Steers were winless. With that perspective, 5-3 isn’t all that bad.
One of the driving forces behind the turnaround is senior RB Michael Oliva, the hard-charging ball carrier who has gained a significant amount of yardage for the Steers this season. Oliva scored the only touchdown in Friday’s 42-9 loss to Sweetwater.

Head Coach Trey Gardner chose two linebackers to share Player of the Week duties after a hard-fought, 21-7 loss to Crane last Friday.
Sophomore Joe Melendez recorded 12 tackles and recovered three fumbles during the affair, while junior Armani Guillama contributed with 12 tackles of his own.
“Melendez was huge for us with the three fumble recoveries and Guillama has taken on the role of the emotional leader of the team,” Gardner said of the athletes. “Both these guys did a great job for us defensively and kept us in the game.”
Neither Melendez or Guillama started for the Bulldogs at the beginning of the season. Melendez was called up from J.V. and Guillama transferred. Both have stepped up for injured Coahoma starters.

Forsan lost 41-7 last Friday, but the loss came to 1A state contender Stamford. It won’t get any easier for the Buffs as they travel to Anson this week to face the 8-0 Tigers, but Head Coach Jason Phillips has confidence in his squad.
Dealing with injuries, Phillips has had to improvise and rely on younger players to get the job done at times.
One of those players is junior WR/CB J.T. Breyman.
“He’s one of the quiet kids,” Phillips said. “He goes about his business and does everything you ask him to. He did a good job covering and broke up some passes (Friday) night.”
