HERALD Photo/Tony Claxton — Jerry Dixon (10) and Joe Bright (44) get ready to defend in Howard College’s 59-58 win over New Mexico Junior College Thurday in Hobbs, N.M. The Howard women lost to NMJC 76-70 in overtime.

HOBBS, N.M. — The Howard College women’s basketball team scratched and clawed its way back into a tough game against New Mexico Junior College Thursday night, but ultimately, a few key turnovers doomed the Hawks in a 76-70 loss in overtime.

The Hawks (15-4, 1-1 in WJCAC play) were down by 10 deep into the second half, but made a push to tie the game at the end of regulation. The Lady T-Birds (15-3, 1-0) had a chance to steal the win with the last shot of the second half, but as soon as that was off the mark, Howard had a chance.

The Hawks, however, had 18 turnovers in Thursday’s game and didn’t have enough firepower to keep up with NMJC in overtime.
The No. 8 Howard men (14-2, 2-0) edged New Mexico Junior College (14-2, 1-1) 59-58 for their 14th win of the season.

Both teams have a big game next week when Midland College comes to town. The women play No. 7 Midland College at 5:45 p.m. and the men follow against No. 18 Midland College at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
