A foot pursuit of a theft suspect led to a grisly discovery by Big Spring police early Sunday afternoon, as they found the decomposed remains of an unidentified male.
Police were called to the Walmart Supercenter just after noon Sunday in reference to a theft.
“Upon arrival, officers became involved in a foot chase with the female suspect,” said Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer for the Big Spring Police Department.
The suspect fled into the ravine area just south of the Walmart, before she was apprehended roughly 300 yards southeast of the store. That’s when police discovered the body.
“Upon searching the area where the arrest was conducted, officers also located the decomposing remains of a male subject,” Everett said. “Investigators were notified and responded (but) due to the state of the remains, officers were unable to positively identify the victim.”
An autopsy of the victim was ordered by Justice of the Peace Quail Dobbs. Everett said the cause of the man’s death and how long his body had been in the ravine has not been determined.
The theft suspect, identified as Misty Clayton, 32, faces multiple charges, Everett said.
“During the investigation into the unattended death, it was found that the female suspect … had also stolen property from the pocket of the victim (as officers approached),” he said.
Clayton was arrested and charged with theft, evading arrest and theft from a corpse. She was booked into the Howard County Detention Center, pending arraignment.
