Ice storm fells county comm tower

December 10, 2013

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

The recent wave of ice storms have done more than just send temperatures plunging and turn roads into skating rinks — it has also done serious damage to Howard County’s communication system.

A tower that county agencies — including the sheriff’s office — used was felled during the ice storm that hit this area the week of Thanksgiving, leaving communication with deputies and other emergency responders in certain areas of the county dicey at best.

Sheriff Stan Parker told Howard County commissioners during their Monday meeting that the loss of the tower has particularly effected communication with deputies’ portable radios.
