March 28, 2013

James Houston Barclay Sr., 89, of Reno, Nev., died Thursday, March 21, 2013, in a Reno, Nev., nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring, Texas, with Derrick Looney officiating.

Jim was born Sept. 12, 1923, in San Augustine, Texas, to Willie and Julia (Grunning) Barclay. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. Jim was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was aboard the USS Utah and made it to shore before the ship sank.
He continued his service aboard the USS Honolulu, which was awarded several unit commendations for heroism in the Pacific Theater. He was a Jack-of-all-trades and is best described as having the wit of Mark Twain and the presence of John Wayne.

He married Mae Nell Cave, a Big Spring native, May 19, 1990, in Granbury and they made their home in Brownwood. She preceded him in death March 8, 2006.

Survivors include one son, Jim Barclay Jr. and wife Tracy and one grandson, Scott Barclay, all of Reno, Nev.; Jim Jr.'s mother, Marie Crowley of Harbor City, Calif.; two brothers, Bernard Barclay and Bobby Barclay, both of San Augustine, Texas; two sisters, Susie Martin of LaRue and Julia Darby of Humble; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Tunnell of Olden; one stepgranddaughter, Dedra Fillman of Cedar Hill; one stepgrandson, Dane Stovall of Grand Prairie; and several nieces and nephews.
