Jerris Springfield passed away Friday morning, Feb. 28, 2014, at his home. He was born May 9, 1936, in Robstown, Texas, to Henry and Mirl Springfield. Jerris and his sisters grew up on the family farm near Vincent, Texas, and he graduated from Coahoma High school in 1954. Jerris attended Texas Western University (now UTEP) on a football scholarship and played in the 1955 Sun Bowl.
He met and married his loving wife Pat in Weatherford, Texas, in 1956. Together, they raised five children at homes in Fort Worth, Houston, Lakewood, Colo., and Ding Dong, Texas. Jerris had a long and successful career as an executive for The Southland Corp. and then for Strasburger Enterprises, where he and Pat opened the first convenience stores in Australia. In 1989, Jerris acquired the JAKâ€™s Drive-Thru stores in New Braunfels, Canyon Lake and Wimberley, Texas. He operated and grew this family business until his retirement in 2004.
Jerris was preceded in death by his father, Henry Springfield; and by two sons, Donny and David Springfield.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Springfield; mother, Mirl Springfield; sisters, Vonna Mae Wyrick (husband Carl) and Teresa Lusk (husband Allan); son, Jimmy and wife Leslie; daughter, Terri Jungmann and husband Ricky; son, Larry and wife Kim; daughter in law, Rita Springfield; grandchildren, Travis Springfield (Danni), Dr. Tracy Springfield (Dave Schmillen), Michelle Lancaster (Gordon), Donny Springfield (Jamie), Shanyn Jackson (Niall), Jason, Michael, Russell (fiancĂ©e Megan) and Dalton Jungmann, Justin Springfield (Jenna), Jerris Springfield (Kyndra) and Sami Springfield, Paige, Blake and Katie Springfield; and 16 great-grandchildren. Many cousins, nephews and nieces will also miss him dearly.
Visitation will be Tuesday March 4, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with funeral services Wednesday March 5 at 10 a.m., both at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in Sattler, Texas. Graveside service to follow at Hill Country Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hope Hospice in New Braunfels, Texas.
