Joe Thomas Swinney, 81, of Rising Star, formerly of Coahoma died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in Sugar Land, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Coahoma Cemetery.
He was born Dec.30, 1931, in Bailey, Texas, to Eula (Freemon) and Jeff Swinney. He married Melva Jean Allen on Sept. 1, 1951, in Big Spring, Texas. He was an electrician by trade. He served as the mayor of Coahoma and mayor of Rising Star. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Melva Swinney of Rising Star; two sons, Dean Swinney and wife Jackie of Kerrville and John Swinney and wife Rachael of Sugar Land; seven grandchildren; brothers, Ray Swinney of Las Cruces, N.M. and Donald Swinney of Abilene; and one sister, Elaine Mount of Lubbock.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Marlene Riffe; and two brothers, Howard Swinney and Eddie Swinney.
