John J. 'Jerry' White

John J. “Jerry” White, 92, of Big Spring died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home. His body will be in state at Myers & Smith Funeral Home Wednesday and Thursday. Graveside services with military honors will be at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas.

He was born April 26, 1920, in Sessor, Ill. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1937 and served in Europe during World War II. He came to Big Spring in July 1968, serving at Webb Air Force Base. He retired from the Air Force in 1970, then worked for the Civil Service at Webb as personnel service director.

He married Hildred Mandrell, Jan. 2, 1940, and she preceded him in death on June 26, 2005.

He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Penny of Hudson Oaks, Texas and Jerry Jo Shires of Denison, Texas; four grandchildren, Ashlyn Jo Shires, Skydra Redden, Zachary Terry and Trey Penny; and four great-grandchildren, Brayden and Cheyenne Redden, Gill and Carter Penny and Jayden Gutierrez.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ross White; one daughter, Cindi Moore; and three sisters and one brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to USO, P. O. Box 96860, Washington, DC, 20077; Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598; or National Wildlife Federation, 11100 Wildlife Center Drive, Reston, VA 20190.
