John Jacob Abendschan, 94, died March 31, 2014, at 5:07 at Deseret Health and Rehab, Colby, Kan.
Jack was born Aug. 2, 1919, in Denver, Colo. He enlisted with the with the U.S. Coast Guard Feb. 22, 1941, was on active duty during WWII and was honorably discharged Jan. 4, 1946. He attended Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., and received a BSN in petroleum engineering.
He graduated from the San Francisco Theological Seminary with a degree in Divinity and received a master's degree in gerontology from the University of Northern Colorado. He moved to Big Spring, Texas, where he assumed an administrative position over an assisted living facility. He then served Christ for more than 20 years, pastoring at The United Methodist Church and leading many people through the
"Walk to Emmaus.â€ť
Jack and his wife, Mary Lou, whom he married March 18, 1942, moved to St. Francis, Kan., in 2003. Jack then moved to Colby Kan., in 2012. Mary Lou died May 14, 2007.
Jack is survived by three sons, John Jacob Abendschan VI of Abilene, Texas, Ronald Emery Abendschan of
Gilbert, Ariz., and Robert William Abendschan of Big Spring, Texas; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Gabel of Colby, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
