Josephine Lewis Massey, 87, of Big Spring died Saturday, March 24, 2012, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2012, at the funeral home.
She was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Big Spring, Texas, and married Vernon Lewis on Dec. 30, 1942, in Big Spring. He preceded her in death April 13, 1993. She then married David L. Massey Jr. on Jan. 2, 1999. He preceded her in death Oct. 26, 2003.
Jo was a lifelong resident of Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School in 1942. She worked as the office manager at Lee Optical for a number of years. She enjoyed her cats and bird watching.
She has been a member of the Church of Christ for more than 60 years and most recently the Garden City Church of Christ.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Murphy and husband Bill of Garden City; one sister, Brenda Kiker and husband Monty of Midland; a sister-in-law, Jo Ann Cross of Warner Robins, Ga.; two grandchildren, Brant Murphy and wife Stephanie of Pflugerville and Dusti Williams and husband Justin of Austin; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Rachel and Hannah Murphy and Colton Williams. After marrying David Massey she was blessed with three more children, Linda Johnson and husband Elmer of Wichita Falls, John Massey and wife Cheryl of Enterprise, Ala., and David Massey III of Houston; as well as more grandchildren, Andy Johnson and wife Melissa of West Africa, Sabrina Hynd and husband Eric of Oklahoma City, Okla., Eric Massey and Stephanie Massey, both of Enterprise, Ala.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Van and Edna Boggs; one sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Bill McMahon; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Maurine and Red Kelley and Laverne and Auda V. Lewis; and her best friend, Dorothy Manley.
The family suggests memorials be made to New Mexico Christian Children's Home, 1356 NM 236, Portales, N.M. 88130; Crossroads Hospice, 421 S. Main St., Big Spring, Texas 79720; or to a favorite charity.
