Julius "Jim" Ryals, 77, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at Big Spring Full Gospel Fellowship, 309 Benton, with Billy Guy officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
He was born July 13, 1936, in Wilmer, Ala. and married Shirley Ann Clawson Aug. 13, 1966, in Big Spring.
Jim started working for the City of Big Spring in 1960. Soon after, he joined the Big Spring Fire Department, where he worked for 27 years, the last five as fire chief. After retiring, he began working at the Big Spring State Hospital and retired again. He attended Texas A&M University and taught Fire Science at Howard College and Arson Investigation School at UTPB.
Jim was a member and served as deacon at Big Spring Full Gospel Fellowship.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Ryals of Big Spring; granddaughter, Brookelynn Jensen; grandson, Zacary Barber; sister-in-law, Wanda Phipps of Big Spring; and several nieces and nephews..
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amanda Barber; his parents, Fred and Emma Maples Ryals; two brothers, Prentice Ryals and Roger Ryals; and two sisters, Eloise Coggins and Juanita Blackmon.
The family suggests memorials be made to Big Spring Full Gospel Fellowship, c/o 1709 Kentucky Way, Big Spring, Texas 79720 or the donor's favorite charity.
