Junior high raises monies for breast cancer awareness

October 18, 2013

As the principal of Big Spring Junior High School, Dalia Benavides serves as the school's strict disciplinarian and leader. When it came down to seeing through on a promise, she kissed a pig.

BSJHS held its annual Pink-Out rally Thursday afternoon, a breast cancer awareness event and school pep rally to energize junior steer athletes in their game against Snyder held later that night.

“We always hold a Pink-Out rally,” said teacher Stacey Barr. “The Kiss the Pig thing just kind of popped up and the kids went crazy over it. They would asked me every day if it was a real pig. Who's going to kiss it? Can we put posters up so everybody can put money in Mrs. Benavides' bucket? They must have, because her bucket brought in $404, and we raised $569 total”

The not-so contested contest lasted five days between Benavides, associate principal Jim Wommack and assistant principals Dana Rodriguez and Rebecca Otto.
