Having already clinched the Western Junior College Athletic Conference title, Howard College is preparing for the Region V tournament after completing a sweep of Midland College at Foundation Field on Saturday by winning 13-4 and 9-1 in a doubleheader.
Claudette Smith helped the Lady Hawks in their rout of the Lady Chaparrals in Game Three of a four-game stand when she belted a grand slam home run. Smith also had a two-run blast, accounting for six RBI during the outing.
Apparently, Megan Granado wanted to add a grand slam to her resume, too. Granado emptied the bases with one swing — scoring Mallory Mitchener, Rebecca Long and Smith — in the final game of the series to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning after a RBI single by Micherie Koria knotted it up at 1-1.
Shelby Shelton wanted in on the home run derby and sent a solo shot over the fence to lead off the bottom of the third.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth, Koria recorded another RBI on a single. The game ended in the sixth when Mitchener picked up a base hit, Smith walked and Long laid down a bunt to load the bases. Lani Munoz ripped a single to score Mitchener and the game ended via run-rule.
Nikki Diaz got the win in the early game, while Nicole Wilson earned a win in the nightcap. Megan Granado also contributed from the circle Saturday.
Next up for the Lady Hawks (47-9, 22-2) will be a doubleheader with Clarendon on Friday and a two-game affair with Frank Phillips College on Saturday.
HC Head Coach Kelly Raines and her team have already locked up the WJCAC title, so the final four games of the regular season will be tune-ups before making an appearance at the Region V championship tournament in Lubbock, which is slated for May 3-5.View more articles in:
