Lady Liberty to get a facelift

August 27, 2011

Repairs are finally beginning on Lady Liberty and before long she will be back where she belongs — in front of the Municipal Auditorium.

After a few chance circumstances, Terry Kessler, owner of Hester's Mechanical Contractors Inc., decided to not only take a look, but agreed to help repair the Statue of Liberty replica that was toppled from its perch in front of the auditorium earlier this year.

Lady Liberty was damaged by a West Texas wind storm this past spring and was removed from her post until repairs could be made. The statue was placed in storage due to the damage caused to its mounting and it was unable to be put back up.

“I went to look at her and once I discovered she wasn't a poured copper statue, but comprised of copper sheets, I decided she was coming with me,” Kessler said.
