Lady Steers down Graham, advance to Semi's
Planning to play the Big Spring Steers? Planning to play four games? Good luck. So far this post season, Big Spring has not had a match go past three games. They have swept all their opponents decisively and last night was no exception. The Lady Steers took down the District 6-3A champion Graham Lady Blues 25-19, 25-14 and 25-14 in the Regional Quarterfinals.Cerbi Ritchey and Morgan Seaton led the team with 17 assists on the night, while Seaton's 10 kills led all players on the court. Ritchey recorded 20 digs in the game, along with eight kills and two blocks, as Seaton also added five digs, four blocks and two aces for Big Spring. The first game was the closest the Lady Blues would come to advancing, though they were never able to gain a real lead over Big Spring. They fought with the Lady Steers' big girls up front as long as they could, but in the end, the Girls of the Black and Gold took over, giving everyone a glimpse of what a playoff team looks like.Just as Big Spring seems to be getting stronger as the playoffs continue, they did the same as the night wore on in Abilene, shutting out any hopes of a fourth game or a Graham upset. Big Spring took the last two games with identical 25-14 scores, then — as they have in the last two games — took their trophy home with them.Haley Dimidjian, Diamond Mayes and Taylor Seaton were a combined force, backing up the setters. The trio combined for 19 kills, 21 blocks (Mayes had a game-high nine blocks), 17 digs, five aces and one assist.Defensively, Carson Reibe was an absolute beast in the back, snagging 23 digs against the Lady Blues. Clara Benavides and Logan Yarbar combined for 20 digs as well, with Benavides also adding three blocks and two kills.Big Spring will get a couple days to rest before heading to Snyder for their Regional Semifinal clash with Andrews. Region I has come down to the top two teams in Districts 4-3A and 5-3A, as Andrews comes in as the district champion in District 4-3A. Also playing Friday in Snyder will be District 5-3A champion Abilene Wylie and District 4-3A runners up Monahans.Big Spring plays Andrews at 1 p.m. and Wylie and Monahans play at 3 p.m. The winner of these two games will meet in the Regional Final Saturday.
