MIDLAND — Not only are the Lady Steers headed to the regional volleyball tournament, they overcame a huge obstacle by the name of Monahans to get there.

Big Spring (29-13) started off strong. Unwilling to let rival Monahans defeat them for the third time this season, the Lady Steers took the first set 25-20 and turned in an even stronger performance in the second set, winning 25-15.

Just when BSHS looked as if it was going to wrap up the match in three straight sets, a controversial call went against Big Spring and Monhans rallied after being two points away from elimination to win 23-25.

With the Momentum on the Lady Loboes' side of the court, they capitalized, winning the third set handily, 19-25 as the Lady Steers found themselves in familiar territory — mired in a dogfight with Monahans.

Making the proper adjustments and keeping cool in the face of adversity, BSHS took the fifth set 15-8.

“The girls worked very hard on the adjustments for this match and it paid off,” Head Coach Lynn Osborne said. “I'm so proud of the way the girls fought for this match and the courage they showed. It was a complete team effort.”

Now back in the 3A semifinal, the Lady Steers' first opponent will be Springtown (32-8), which they will meet Friday at 3 p.m. at the Coliseum on the campus of Western Texas College in Snyder. A win would put BSHS in the regional championship game Saturday at 3 p.m.
