GARLAND â Big Springâs hopes of a state title were rudely ended Friday at the Curtis Cullwell Center as the Lady Steerâs historic season came to a close in the state semifinal round.
Big Spring ran into a team with too many weapons and the result was a 25-12, 25-22, 25-10 loss to the Decatur Eagles.
Itâs the first trip to the state tournament for the 40-7 Eagles and they made the most of their initial semifinal appearance.
Big Spring, making its second state tournament appearance and first since 1977, had no answer for the 1-2-3 punch of Martin Cooper, Makayla Mayfield and Caroline Lowery, who combined for 29 of Decaturâs 35 total kills.
âI think we could have done a better job against them,â said Big Spring coach Lynn Osborne. âI thought we had some nerves. Plus they had a tough serve and we struggled with our passing.â
Decatur dominated the first and third sets, jumping to leads of 21-12 and 20-10 in each.
Big Spring posed its only threat in the second set when they jumped to early leads of 10-7 and 15-12 behind the tough serve of Stevi Ward and the strong attack of Morgan Seaton and Erin Pollard.
Mayfield and Lowery sparked an 8-2 run to regain the lead and then fought back a late Big Spring rally, led by Kelsie Guinn and Ebony Zavala, to take the set and control of the match.
Pollard led Big Spring with 11 kills and Seaton had 7 kills to go with 10 assists. Kinsey Walsh had 7 assists while Stevi Ward and Julianna Rodriguez led the back row with 8 and 6 assists.
It was a disappointing finish to a 32-14 season, but there was still a sense of accomplishment.
âIt was an amazing season,â said Seaton. âWe accomplished a lot. And our fans were really behind us all year.â
âIâm very proud of the girls,â said Osborne. âThey have overcome a lot this season to get here.â
âWe made our community proud,â added Wash. âWe worked really hard this year. It just ended really quickly.â
