Fresh off of a weekend filled with scrimmage action, the Lady Steers will be on the road tonight as they head east to take on the Eagles of Abilene High School. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start in Abilene, preceded by JV and freshman games.
The Lady Steers take the court this year with an experienced team, having lost only three players to graduation this last summer. Head Coach Lynn Osborne said she was ready to get the girls on the court and see what they could do.
“We have some leadership and experience on the team this year,” Coach Osborne said. “That should prove to be one of our strengths during the season.”
The Lady Steers are coming off of a 21-18 (7-2 league) season that was good enough to earn them a brief visit to the playoffs where they fell to the Vernon Lions.
Tonight, they face an Eagle squad that is starting from scratch. Seven Eagles that were on the court last year when Abilene defeated Big Spring in three matches (25-15, 25-21 and 25-20) have graduated, leaving only five returning leaders. Tonight’s season opener sets up a classic youth versus experience scenario.
The Lady Steers will not be showcasing their game before a home crowd until Aug.16, when they will host Frenship. The team will begin the district portion of their schedule Sept. 24. That game also will be a home game, as the girls defend Steer Gym against visiting Sweetwater.View more articles in:
