Lady Steers oust Snyder for first district win

Apparently, the Big Spring Lady Steers made up their minds in practice Wednesday they weren’t going to fall to 0-4 in District 5-3A play.

Whatever was said then, it definitely gave Big Spring a much-needed spark as the Lady Steers upended Snyder 59-53 Friday in Steer Gym.

“We were just determined,” BSHS center Cerbi Ritchey said. “In practice on Wednesday, we decided ‘Hey, we’re tired of this and this isn’t our team. So we’re going to practice hard and we’re going to play hard.’ So we did. We played like we practiced this week and it really paid off.”

All seems right again with the Lady Steers after Friday’s win. Ritchey led the way with 18 points after scoring six in Tuesday’s loss to Sweetwater. But even better, Mackenzie Stone had 14 points on four 3-pointers Friday night.

The Lady Steers have been in dire need of strong post play and perimeter shooting during their 0-3 start in district play.

The third quarter was huge for Big Spring. Down 30-27 early in the third, Stone propelled the Lady Steers to a 33-32 lead with three consecutive 3-pointers.

Big Spring wasn’t done, though. After two free throws, Ritchey and Diamond Mayes hit layups to give the Lady Steers a 42-32 lead, their biggest of the game. Meanwhile, Snyder was riddled by turnovers and missed shots. The Lady Tigers only hit three field goals in the third and while they cut the lead to four with about 21 second left in the game, Big Spring’s third quarter was too much to overcome.
