Lady Steers start season with win

August 10, 2011

The Lady Steers got their season off to a good start last night, defeating Abilene High School in four matches. Scores of 25-14, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-22 allowed the team to avenge last season’s loss at the hands of the Lady Eagles.

The Steers got off to a fast start in the match, taking it first-round win easily 25-14, but Abilene seemed to get stronger as the game progressed and made things a bit more competitive. as the Lady Steers’ opening night went along.

The 11 point win in the first round dwindled to a three point 25-22 win in the second, as the Lady Eagles seemed to find their footing on their home court.

The close second round was followed by a Big Spring loss in the third, as Abilene made their biggest run of the night, scoring nine unanswered points during one stretch to claim the match 22-25, forcing a fourth game. But instead of allowing the game to go to five matches, Big Spring bounced back and ended it in the fourth match 25-22.

Big Spring, 1-0, will next be playing in a tournament in Monahans Thursday through Saturday, before returning for their home opener Tuesday night against Frenship.

The varsity squad is scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steer Gym.
