BROWNWOOD — Generosity has its limits.
The Big Spring Lady Steers gave up seven unearned runs, which was more than the Brownwood Lady Lions needed en route to an 8-2 win in District 5-3A softball action Friday night.
Brownwood was clinging to a 2-1 lead when it exploded for six unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to salt away the game.
Valerie Ross took the loss for Big Spring, which fell to 13-15 overall and 1-2 in district play.
BSHS Coach John Sparks said the Lady Steers, who committed seven errors in the game, will have cut down on their defensive charity if they are going to have any success the rest of the season.
“”We've got to the play error-free ball in order to win,” he said. “And that's something we're going to work on beginning Monday. We put the ball in play and we left too many people on base. We just need to go back to the drawing board and work on our defense.”
The Lady Steers return to action Tuesday when they host Abilene Wylie at the Big Spring ISD Softball Complex. Game time is 5 p.m.

BROWNWOOD — The Brownwood Lions scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete a 12-2 run-rule victory over the Big Spring Steers in District 5-3A baseball action Friday night.
BSHS Coach Burt Otto said his team was much more competitive than it was in its district opener against Snyder, but just “ran out of gas” against Brownwood.
Gunnar Kennedy was tagged with the loss for the Steers, who fell to 10-10 overall and 0-2 in district play.
“We were a lot more competitive (Friday), but Gunnar just ran out of gas in the fifth,” Otto said. “We had some chances to to make some plays in the fifth and get out of the jam, but we didn't.
“We're just not taking charge of things,” he added. “It seems like everyone is waiting on someone else to make a play.”
