GRANBURY — The Lady Steers began their weekend tournament with a loss to Mansfield Summit on Friday, but then won their next five-of-six matches to take third place in the Silver Division.

Big Spring is gearing up for a tough District 4-3A schedule which includes Abilene Wylie and Monahans, both highly touted teams along with BSHS.

Big Spring Head Volleyball Coach Lynn Osborne believes there are no teams you can take lightly once district play begins.

She schedules as many larger schools and fiercely competitive opponents as possible to prepare her players for what lies ahead.

“It’s a strong district,” Osborne added. “You can’t sleep on anybody. We’ll have to respect every team, every week to accomplish our goals. We have to play up.”

So far, the Lady Steers have been up to the challenge, accruing 11 wins and five losses  during their predistrict run.

After the the loss to Summit (23-25,17-25) in the opener, BSHS defeated Richland (25-19, 28-30, 25-22), Weatherford (26-28, 25-15, 25-16), Abilene Cooper (25-18, 25-12), Lubbock High (25-18, 25-12), then lost its second match to Grace Prep (19-25, 16-25) before defeating Cooper one more time (25-23, 25-18) to close out the tourney.

Next up for the Lady Steers will be a road trip to Grape Creek on Tuesday. Varsity is scheduled to play at 6 p.m., with junior varsity at 5 p.m. and freshmen at 4 p.m.
