ANDREWS — The Big Spring Lady Steers are making a name for themselves as the 2011 track and field season continues.
The Lady Steers continued a strong season-long performance by claiming first place at the Max Goldsmith Relays in Andrews Friday.
Big Spring scored 193 points to easily win the varsity girls' division, out-pacing runner-up Andrews by almost 70 points.
The team's relays set the tone for the meet, as Big Spring swept all three events.
The 400-meter relay, consisting of Donisha McGee, Desiree Anderson, Darshae Vanderbilt and Bridget Tuitt, placed first in a time of 48.65, four seconds better than runner-up Andrews. Tuitt, Vanderbilt and Anderson were joined by April Turner to form the winning 800-meter relay contingent, placing first in a time of 1:42.50, which was 10 seconds better than second-place Snyder.
BSHS rounded out its relay dominance when Andi Deleon, Vanderbilt, Turner and Carson Reibe won the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4:18.65.
Individually, Anderson claimed first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.53 to edge Tuitt, who crossed the finish line .13 of a second later. Turner was fourth with a time of 26.28. Riebe claimed BSHS' other individual gold medal in the running events, winning the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 51.47.
But Big Spring also picked up plenty of points with a bushel load of second -and-third-place finishes, which Coach Nick Roberson said was a perfect example of his team's approach to the season.
“All year long, we've been preaching team,” Roberson said. “Even though we've got some great individual performers, we're deep enough that we've taken a team approach … and it's obvious that the girls have contributed to the team a lot this year.”
The Lady Steers' success has come as no surprise to Roberson.
“We had this group of girls in place, and we knew we had depth coming up through the ranks,” he said. “My expectations were very high, and their expectations are high, as well. They win an event, but then they'll get mad because they didn't have a personal best time or distance.. They compete against themselves as much as they compete against their opponents.”
The Lady Steers return to action Friday when they compete at Seminole.
Big Spring also claimed the team title in the junior varsity division. The Lady Steers totaled 185 points, easily out-pacing Andrews, which was second with 92 points.
