HERALD Photo/Adam Coleman — Taniqua Ards fights to get a shot off against Odessa College’s Clarissa Davis in Thursday’s game.
A bad shooting night didn’t stop Howard College from stealing a win on the road at Western Texas College Monday. But nights like those can’t happen against teams like Odessa.
The Lady Wranglers got easy buckets and Howard couldn’t answer back on a consistent basis in Thursday’s 60-45 loss.
Odessa had three players in double figures. Kiaherra Powell was hard to stop in the paint with 15 and Takoia Larry and Clarissa Davis had 14 apiece.
“A lot of people didn’t show up to play,” said HC guard Twyla Ards, whose team took a 60-45 loss to Odessa College Thursday. “We had a few players, their game wasn’t on. No one was doing anything really.”
Powell’s dominance early on was easy to spot.
What was a close game late in the first half, turned into an exhibition when Powell scored six straight points in the last 2:13 for a 31-23 lead at halftime.
The Hawks had a 21-20 lead with 4:05 left, but two buckets from Davis and another from Telisha Joe had Odessa up 24-21. Then Powell took over.
Just like in the Western Texas College game Monday, not much was going on offensively for the Hawks, who shot 23 percent from the field by halftime against Odessa.
The Hawks had a sluggish start to Monday’s game at WTC and came back for the win, but Odessa just continued to apply the pressure.
“I think we thought we were going to come back and Odessa was too good,” HC head coach Earl Diddle said. “They played very well. They played well defensively.”
Howard didn’t see the lead again after Odessa grabbed a firm hold of it at the end of the first half.
Diddle is not ready to call this a shooting slump, though. It’s other issues that are plaguing the Hawks.
Diddle said his team’s shot selection is off a little bit and being out-rebounded 45-33 didn’t help either.
The Hawks haven’t been able to really get in a rhythm, which Diddle is hoping to turn around soon.
