LDS luminary to help dedicate local chapel

February 24, 2011

Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be in Big Spring Saturday and Sunday to dedicate the new Big Spring Chapel.

While it is rare for one of the three-member First Presidency (which is the presiding organization over the 14 million member worldwide church) to attend this kind of event, President Uchtdorf is making the trip because of his ties to the area.

Born in what was then Mährisch-Ostrau, Czechoslovakia on Nov. 6, 1940, Uchtdorf was raised in Zwickau, Germany. At the age of 19 he joined the German Air Force and was trained at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, where he earned his pilot wings.
