Local man killed in one-vehicle accident

May 20, 2013

A Big Spring man died from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident in Midland early Sunday.

Midland Police Deparment officials say Robert “Tito” Vasquez II died early Sunday morning after he lost control of his vehicle while driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

The accident occurred just past midnight in the 500 block of W. Illinois, records state.

According to reports, Vasquez was east-bound on Illinois — the wrong way — at a high rate of speed at 12:47 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle. His car then left the roadway, striking a tree head-on on the driver's side.

Midland police and fire department officials responded to the4 scene, where Vasquez was declared dead.

There were four passengers in the car at the time of the accident, but only one required medical treatment — that person was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, the report stated — while the others were uninjured.

MPD Public Information Officer Sara Higgins said alcohol and the speed of the vehicle were likely contributing factors to the crash.

Funeral arrangements for Vasquez are being handled by Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
